Wonder of Wonder, Miracle of Miracles: The Lessons of the Hanukkah Miracle

As Hanukkah approaches, what does the Talmud have to say to those of us who question the notion of miracles—and who continue to wonder where God’s miracles are? We express our Judaism differently from each other and from the Sages of the Gemara, but we share in the struggle with what it means to live in a world where our relationship with God is something we take comfort in, but also question.

Dr. Marjorie Lehman is associate professor of Talmud and Rabbinics at JTS. Her research centers on talmudic aggadah, Jewish gender studies, the history of the Hebrew book, and the scholarship of teaching. She has published a book on the En Ya’akov; contributed to a feminist Talmud commentary; collaborated on the creation of Footprints, a digital humanities project on the history and movement of Jewish books; and advises the Jewish Day School Standards and Benchmarks Rabbinics Initiative.
