Ilu Finu: A Cappella and the Spirit of Jewish Worship

Sunday, November 10, 2019, 2:00 p.m–6:00 p.m.

Jewish a cappella has thrived for over 30 years as a growing, uplifting source of Jewish music. This special mini-conference will celebrate Jewish a cappella and explore its musical style as a vehicle for enhancing congregation-centered communal prayer.

Led by JTS alumnus Hazzan Matt Austerklein and an ensemble of Jewish a cappella singers, this model Shabbat Musaf service will combine congregational singing with contemporary a cappella–style music, featuring repertoire drawn from the new Cantors Assembly publication Ilu Finu: A Cappella for Jewish Prayer. JTS faculty member Rabbi Jan Uhrbach, director of the Block / Kolker Center for Spiritual Arts will then explore strategies for effectively using musical ensembles in prayer.

Singers include: Thalia Sharon, Arielle Green, Carly Friedman, Miriam Bursky-Tammam, Jacob Sandler, Josh Rosenberg, Josh Ehrlich, and Cory Hecht.

This 90-minute workshop will be followed by a panel, moderated by Cantor Nancy Abramson, director of H. L. Miller Cantorial School, on the state of Jewish a cappella, and an invitational concert.

Space is limited.
