Sandra Fox is the Robert S. Rifkind Chair in American Jewish history at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Her research interests include American Jewish history, the history of youth and childhood, Yiddish culture, and the history of sexuality. Her first book, The Jews of Summer: Summer Camp and Jewish Culture in Postwar America (Stanford University Press) addressed the experiences of youth in postwar Jewish summer camps and the place of intergenerational negotiation in the making of American Jewish culture. Her next book considers how changing conceptions of modern youth and childhood shaped American Jewish life. Sandra has published academic work in Jewish Social Studies, American Jewish History, and the Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth, and popular writing in the New York Times, Slate, and Haaretz.
Previous to her joining JTS, Sandra was a visiting assistant professor of American Jewish History and director of the Archive of the American Jewish Left in the Digital Age at New York University. She received her doctorate from New York University’s joint History and Hebrew Judaic Studies program in 2018, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Ben Gurion University and Stanford University. She is the founder and executive producer of the Yiddish-language podcast Vaybertaytsh: A Feminist Podcast in Yiddish and serves on the editorial board of In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies.
