Semester at List

Meet Aria Levitt, a junior from Vancouver, British Columbia, who is participating in the Semester at List College Program for students seeking a strong Jewish educational opportunity. We’re thrilled to welcome Aria to this unique program that allows students at other universities to live and learn in the List College community for one or two semesters.

Aria is enrolled at the University of Victoria, where she is pursuing a BA in Linguistics. The University of Victoria does not offer Hebrew or Judaic classes, which Aria was interested in studying. While visiting friends at List College, Aria saw why they loved their college community so much and decided to enroll as a visiting student.

This semester Aria is earning credit for five diverse Jewish studies classes: “Hebrew Alef 3” with Sarah Hochfeld, “Hope and Despair in the Bible” with Dean Amy Kalmanofsky, “Intermediate Talmud: How Do We Make Light?” with Dr. Marcus Mordechai Schwartz, “History of the Holocaust” with Dr. Jason Schulman, and “Foundations of the Jewish Canon I” with Rabbi Gordon Tucker.

When she’s not in class, Aria has had the chance to fully participate in the List College experience. She is living in our residence halls, where she has gotten to know her classmates outside of the classroom. A favorite memory was participating in the List College Retreat at Camp Ramah Berkshires and spending Shabbat with her classmates.

The chance to live in New York also drew Aria to List. Outside of her studies, Aria has made time to explore. Highlights include visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, Central Park, 5th Avenue, the Highline, and SoHo.

Of her experiences, Aria shared, “The JTS community has been incredibly welcoming. While I will only be visiting one semester, it is a family I will remember.”
