JTS Appoints Inaugural Rifkind Chair in Jewish History

Dr. Sandra Fox Joins the JTS Faculty

May 1, 2025—New York, NY —The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), one of the world’s foremost institutions of Jewish higher education, announced today that Dr. Sandra Fox will be the new Rifkind Chair in Jewish History.

“It is a tremendous honor to welcome Dr. Sandra Fox to the JTS faculty. As a Jewish historian myself, I’m especially proud to see another scholar join our community of experts in this vital field of study. In today’s world, it is more important than ever for JTS students to engage in a thoughtful and informed way with the complexities of our history. I remain deeply grateful to Bob Rifkind z”l, whose vision and generosity made this pivotal role possible,” said JTS Chancellor Shuly Rubin Schwartz.

In her new role, Dr. Fox will bring her extensive academic experience and wide-ranging research interests to her teaching and will guide JTS students through a deep exploration of the modern Jewish experience. She comes to JTS following academic appointments at NYU, Stanford University, and Ben Gurion University.  Dr. Fox has a PhD from NYU and a BA from The New School, Eugene Lang College.

“I’m thrilled and honored to be joining the faculty at JTS as the Rifkind Chair,” said Dr. Fox. “As an American Jewish historian, it means so much to be part of an institution that has played such a major role in the making of Jewish life. I’m excited to continue my research and teaching as a member of the JTS community, connecting students to the rich and complex stories of modern Jewish history.”

Dr. Fox will assume her new role on July 1, 2025.
