When the Sages of the Talmud read the Bible, they did so not only to understand what was within it but also to draw out of it ideas and legal precedents that could form the basis of a new kind of Jewish exegetical tradition. This course will serve as a brief survey of midrashic literature, focusing on texts from different time periods and different traditions to help us better understand how and why the Rabbis chose to read the Bible expansively. No knowledge of Hebrew or previous experience with midrash is required.

Cost: $120 for four sessions
Need-based scholarships available. Send inquires to lyfeinman@jtsa.edu.

Dr. Rachel Rosenthal holds a PhD in Rabbinic Literature from JTS, where she is adjunct assistant professor of Talmud and Rabbinics. She was voted List College Teacher of the Year in 2018. She writes a regular newsletter on the intersection of Torah and everyday life.
