The Heart of the World: Reading Rebbe Nahman of Bratzlav

Dr. Eitan Fishbane delves into the inspiring works of Rebbe Nahman of Bratzlav (1772-1810), a charismatic leader and mystical thinker whose ideas remain influential both within and beyond the Hasidic world. In this intimate seminar, we will read his teachings and stories, as well as key works of contemporary scholarship, seeking to understand Rebbe Nahman’s views on core issues such as the quest for God and faith; varieties of mystical experience; prayer and music; and much more. This discussion-centered course will also include at-home reading assignments of accessible academic works. Space is limited.

Eitan Fishbane, associate professor of Jewish thought, JTS, teaches courses in the literature and history of Jewish mysticism, from medieval Kabbalah to modern Hasidism, and seeks to integrate advanced scholarship and the cultivation of contemporary spiritual meaning.
