How have Jews thought about the idea of the afterlife? This course examines both biblical and rabbinic understandings of resurrection and immortality. We will also touch on the question of why modern Jews tend to know so little about traditional Jewish views of the afterlife—a question that illuminates a great deal about the nature of American Judaism. Finally, we will consider the Yizkor memorial prayer in relation to the afterlife and explore its possible roots in the ancient Near East.

This course is generously sponsored by Yale Asbell, JTS Trustee.

Cost

$120 for four sessions.
