Deena Cowans’ visit to Congregation Agudas Achim will include a special Friday night service and d’var Torah, Shabbat morning sermon, and Shabbat afternoon discussion with teens entitled “Do you forgive me? Prove it!”  Deena will also lead stories and tefillah Sunday morning at the Congregation Agudas Achim Religious School.

Originally from the Chicago suburbs, Deena Cowans is a third-year rabbinical student at JTS. She received her BA from Duke University and her MPA in International Development from Columbia University in 2016. Between college graduation and graduate school, she worked in Washington, DC with incarcerated immigrants and refugees facing deportation, in Jerusalem with African asylum seekers, and in Kathmandu, Nepal with young people who live in a slum. Deena worked for Camp Ramah for 11 years, most recently as the director of education for Camp Ramah in the Rockies. She is also currently a rabbinic intern and the youth director at Congregation Ansche Chesed in New York City, the Slifka Campus Fellow at Cornell University, and a chaplaincy intern at the Exodus Transitional Community in East Harlem, New York. Deena loves to unwind by training for marathons, practicing yoga, and cooking elaborate vegetarian meals.
