Purim’s Other Mitzvot, Past and Present
presented by Rabbi Judith Hauptman

Purim observance in many of our communities is focused primarily on the reading of the Megillah. Professor Hauptman will share her insights into the mitzvot of Matanot La’evyonim, Mishloah Manot, and Seudat Purim as they developed from the Talmud through the rishonim to the codes. She will discuss the challenges of these practices as well as contemporary options for the meaningful performance of these mitzvot.

Rabbi Judith Hauptman is the E. Billi Ivry professor emerita of Talmud and Rabbinic Culture at JTS. Her research focuses on tracing the history of the text of the Talmud and teasing women’s history out of rabbinic texts. Her volume, Rereading the Rabbis, A woman’s Voice has been called a founding work of the new Jewish feminism. In 2004, she started Ohel Ayalah, a free, walk-in High Holiday service for Jews in their 20s and 30s.
