Join us for a unique evening of Yiddish music with former cast members and the musical director of the acclaimed Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, who will bring to life the sheet music and theatrical ads featured in JTS’s ongoing Library exhibit Living Yiddish in New York (through October 5). Featuring Steven Skybell (Tevye) and Stephanie Lynn Mason (Hodl), accompanied by Zalmen Mlotek, artistic director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) and musical director of Fiddler.

About the Performers

Steven Skybell most recently starred off Broadway as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, directed by Joel Grey, for which he received the Lucille Lortel award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. His other Broadway credits include the 2016 revival of Fiddler on the Roof (Lazar Wolf); Pal Joey; Wicked; The Full Monty; Love! Valour! Compassion!; Café Crown; and Ah, Wilderness! His off-Broadway credits include Babette’s Feast, Cymbeline, and Antigone in New York.

Stephanie Lynne Mason is honored to be here and reunite with Steven Skybell to celebrate the Jewish immigrant experience. She recently finished a critically acclaimed run as Hodl in Joel Grey’s celebrated production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, after having covered the principal daughters in the 2016 Broadway revival directed by Bartlett Sher. Other credits include Gussie in Amerike the Golden Land and Mirele in The Sorceress at NYTF, as well as Dyanne in Million Dollar Quartet and Louise in Gypsy. Zalmen Mlotek is an internationally recognized authority on Yiddish folk and theater music, as well as a leading figure in the Jewish theater and concert worlds. For the past 20 years, Mlotek has been the artistic director and conductor at NYTF. He brought Yiddish-Klezmer music to Broadway and off-Broadway stages with the Tony-nominated Those Were the Days and Drama Desk–nominated Amerike: The Golden Land. He serves as music director for most NYTF productions, including the Drama Desk–nominated musical The Golden Bridge. His music can be heard in over two-dozen recordings and films, and he has taught and performed all over the world and worked with countless singers, including Jan Peerce, Theodore Bikel, and Mandy Patinkin. He was the musical director and conductor of the critically acclaimed Fidler Afn Dakh (Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish), directed by Joel Gry. Mlotek received his musical training at the Juilliard School of Music and studied under Leonard Bernstein.
