Miracles, Light, and Mysticism: Hasidic Reflections on Hanukkah
Join JTS for a free webinar for rabbis designed to inspire you in your preparation of Hanukkah derashot and teaching this year. This program is offered in collaboration with the Rabbinical Assembly.
Wednesday, December 11, 12:00 p.m.–1:15 p.m. Eastern Time
This webinar is presented by Dr. Eitan Fishbane.
According to hasidic mystics from R. Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev to the Sefat Emet and beyond, miracles may be explained as an eruption of the divine in the world and within our spiritual consciousness. In teaching about Hanukah, they incorporated this idea into a quest for God as a Being or a Presence of light. In this webinar, we will explore the spiritual dynamics embedded in this nexus of Hanukkah, light, miracles, and the life of faith.
Dr. Eitan Fishbane is associate professor of Jewish Thought at JTS, where he teaches courses in the literature and history of Jewish mysticism, from medieval Kabbalah to modern Hasidism. The author or editor of six books, Dr. Fishbane has devoted his research and writing primarily to the development of Kabbalah in medieval Spain. Actively involved in the mentoring of rabbinical, graduate, and undergraduate students, Dr. Fishbane seeks to integrate advanced scholarship and the cultivation of contemporary spiritual meaning. Before coming to JTS in 2006, he served on the faculties of Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion and in the Department of Religion at Carleton College.
