“Order Please, This Is Not The Knesset Here!”: The Past, Present, and Future of Israel’s Elections

Dix Hills Jewish Center
555 Vanderbilt Parkway
Dix Hills, NY 11746

When compared with the American system of elections (the electoral college notwithstanding), Israel’s electoral process can seem somewhat bewildering. Despite this, the process of electing representatives to the Knesset (and by extension the Prime Minister and cabinet) has remained mostly the same over the past 70 years asidefrom a brief two-year period (1999-2001) in which the Prime Minister was elected directly.

This talk will examine the basics of Israel’s electoral process and the shifts in Israel’s partisan-political constellation over the years. We will give particular focus to the outcome of the most recent elections and analyze their potential impact for the future of Israel and its relationship both with the Palestinian people and with Global Jewry.

The JTS lecture will be preceded by a class with a local clergy member.
