BIBLICAL HEBREW ADVANCED SEMINAR: THE BOOK OF JONAH

An Online Course with Dr. David Zev Moster
Eight Wednesdays: March 8, 15, 22, 29; April 19, 26; May 3, 10, 2023
2:00-3:30 p.m. ET

Are you interested in reading a book of the Tanakh from start to finish in the original Hebrew? In eight live online sessions, we will read the Book of Jonah in its entirety. In addition to discussing literary themes, we will focus on the most difficult passages and explore multiple options for translation and interpretation. We will also explore the genre of the “complaint” Psalm, analyzing several examples relevant to Jonah’s prayer from the belly of the fish. Participants are encouraged to complete an assignment before each class and to create their own translation of Jonah.

Recordings will be available for those unable to attend a session.

Prerequisite: completion of JTS’s Biblical Hebrew Workshop course, or a thorough grasp of Biblical Hebrew nouns, prefixes, suffixes, and verbal stems.

If you’re not sure if this course is right for you or if you have other questions, please contact Lynn Feinman at lyfeinman@jtsa.edu.

Cost: $280

This course will utilize Accordance Bible Software, among other resources. Participants will receive a coupon to purchase the software at a discounted rate of $50. Students can purchase Dr. Moster’s Biblical Hebrew Grammar Card and Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary Card on Amazon for $19 each.
