Anna Chapman May was invested as a hazzan (cantor) by the H. L. Miller Cantorial School. Anna, who comes from a family of mixed faiths, decided to become a hazzan while living and working in Jerusalem, and after observing a friend’s experience as a Cantorial School student and graduate. During her studies, Anna said her experience in chaplaincy and pastoral education was especially important in giving her the confidence to take on leadership roles. She says, “I now feel confident in my ability to perform for an audience, to express myself through music, and to connect to God and to other people through music and our sacred liturgy.”
