All the Horrors of War: A Jewish Girl, a British Doctor, and the Liberation of Bergen-Belsen
An online conversation with author Dr. Bernice Lerner
Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at 7:30 p.m. ET
Join author, scholar, and JTS alum Dr. Bernice Lerner of Boston University when she discusses her book, All the Horrors of War: A Jewish Girl, a British Doctor, and the Liberation of Bergen-Belsen.
All the Horrors of War follows Hugh Llewelyn Glyn Hughes, a high-ranking British officer, and Rachel Genuth, a Jewish teenager from the Hungarian provinces, as they navigate the final, brutal year of World War II. Their stories converge before the war’s end, in Bergen-Belsen, where Hughes finds himself responsible for an unprecedented situation: thousands of war-ravaged inmates are in need of immediate hospitalization, including Genuth.
Their narratives tell a larger story—about the suffering of the victims and the struggles of liberators who strove to save lives, about the human capacity for fortitude and redemption.
Robert G. Kegan, author of In Over Our Heads: The Mental Demands of Modern Life, writes: “A towering achievement, Lerner’s narrative at once brings us into hell along with its central characters and then lifts us out on the strength of their respective forms of courage and generosity. This meticulously researched story is nourishment for the soul.”
This event is sponsored by The JTS Library. Dr. David Kraemer, Joseph J. and Dora Abbell Librarian and professor of Talmud and Rabbinics, JTS, will serve as moderator.
