The Herodian Temple was one of the most impressive buildings in the ancient Mediterranean world. Thanks to the latest technology in the field of virtual reality, a team from the University of Tübingen has made it possible for people to visit this ancient structure. Through playful interaction with avatars and 3D models of authentic coins, visitors can actively experience how money was handled in the Jerusalem Temple during the First Century: from exchanging foreign money at the money changers’ tables to pay the temple tax, to buying doves as sacrificial animals, as evidenced in biblical texts.

The Herodian Temple, which was destroyed during the conquest of Jerusalem by Roman troops in 70 CE, was reconstructed in VR and ancient coins from the collection of the Institute of Classical Archaeology were integrated as high-resolution 3D models.
