About Galeet Dardashti’s Monajat

Monajat re-imagines the Selihot ritual in collaboration with an acclaimed ensemble of musicians, an electronic soundscape, and dynamic live video art. Monajat is a Persian word meaning an intimate dialogue with the Divine. Using Persian melodies and Hebrew texts, the work pays homage to Dardashti’s grandfather, a master Persian classical vocalist. She performs some of the Persian piyutim (liturgical songs) traditionally chanted as part of the Selihot service, as well as other liturgical and non-liturgical Hebrew and Persian poetry set to new music. Through electronics, she defies time and performs with her grandfather.

Praise for Monajat

“Galeet Dardashti brings a unique depth of experience, knowledge, and family history to this meaningful night on the Jewish spiritual calendar. Members of our community were greatly moved by the integrity of her approach, the authenticity of her music and her original presentation—an unforgettable and truly wonderful beginning to the Days of Awe.” —Rabbi Andy Bachman, Congregation Beth Elohim, Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY

Monajat is one of those unforgettable performances that transcends time and space through intergenerational voices and mesmerizing visuals. Dardashti and the accompanying musicians are superb performers whose talents are indeed impressive and inspiring.” —Greg Sandoval, Curator of Public Programs, Fowler Museum, UCLA

“The essential vibe of Galeet Dardashti’s concert was vibrant, alive and indeed exultant—as if to suggest a kind of spiritual empowerment through poetry and singing can be ours for the taking.” —Jordan Elgrably, Levantine Cultural Center
