How Do We Come to Know God? Psalm 19 and the Balancing Act of Jewish Theology
Psalm 19 poses the question: Can we know God through nature, or is revelation necessary for acquiring the truth about what is in heaven? Answering this will take us from the text of Psalm 19, through a few other biblical texts, into some archaeological finds, through a little modern Christian theology, and back to our text.
Dr. Benjamin Sommer is professor of Bible and Ancient Semitic Languages at JTS. He received his PhD at the University of Chicago and served as director of the Crown Family Center for Jewish Studies at Northwestern University. An overarching concern of Dr. Sommer’s scholarship is the relationships between the theology of Torah shebikhtav and Torah shebe’al peh. His most recent book is Revelation and Authority: Sinai in Jewish Scripture and Tradition, and he is the editor of the Psalms volumes of the JPS Bible Commentary series.
