“You are My Witnesses”: The Religious Meanings of Bearing Witness

The trope of “witnessing” has entered into the vocabulary of justice work, both bearing witness to other people’s suffering and as social protest. With the Torah readings for Rosh Hashanah as a starting point, we will use halakhic and aggadic frameworks to explore these questions: What is the religious significance of witnessing suffering? How might bearing witness constitute an ethical act?

Rabbi David Hoffman is vice chancellor and chief advancement officer at JTS, and also serves as assistant professor of Talmud and Jewish Law. He is a dynamic and engaging teacher and has taught widely in diverse Jewish communities across North America to both lay and rabbinic leaders. He has studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Yeshivat Hamivtar in Efrat.
