The Sacrifice of Isaac is a paradigmatic episode in Jewish philosophy, ethics, and interpretation. But new ideas in modern and postmodern philosophy call us to re-read this narrative, and change the ways we have often read the story. We will re-tell this story according to an “old-new” method, amalgamating historical and emblematic ways of viewing the story, but also bringing new ideas to the fore, especially around the ideas of passion and holiness in Jewish thought. Dr. Kaye will propose important suggestions for reading the Sacrifice of Isaac in our contemporary world.

About Dr. Miriam Feldmann Kaye
Dr. Miriam Feldmann Kaye is visiting assistant professor at JTS and lecturer in Jewish philosophy at Bar Ilan University.
Dr. Feldmann Kaye’s field of research is modern and contemporary Jewish philosophy, continental theology, philosophy of religion, and the study of religion (specifically the schools of thought of existentialism, deconstructionism and hermeneutics). Dr. Feldmann Kaye is a recipient of the University of Cambridge Theological Studies Prize and holds a BA from Cambridge University, Faculty of Divinity. She gained her MA from the University of London and her PhD in Jewish Thought from the University of Haifa. She completed a Lady Davis Post-Doctoral Fellowship and a Truman Research Institute Associate Fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her publications include Anatheism, published in the Journal of Religion and Theology, and her monograph, Jewish Theology for a Postmodern Age, published by Liverpool University Press in association with the Littman Library of Jewish Civilization, in 2019.
