The story of Rabbi Akiva gifting his pious wife Rachel a golden crown adorned with the city walls of Jerusalem hints at the intertwining of women and Jerusalem in the rabbinic imagination. This course will explore rabbinic texts specifically about Jerusalem’s women. Did women participate in the construction of and worship in the Temple? What role did women play in the revolt against Rome, the destruction of the Temple, and mourning its aftermath? Which Jerusalemite women are memorialized in and around the city for their accomplishments? And what do we learn about the ancient Rabbis when we study the stories they told about the place of women in the holy city?
