Rabbi Kruspadai says in the name of Rabbi Yohanan: Three books are opened on Rosh Hashanah: one of the entirely wicked, and one of the entirely righteous, and one of those somewhere in between. The completely righteousโ€”they are written and sealed for life right away. The completely wickedโ€”they are written and sealed for death right away. Those in betweenโ€”they hang in the balance from Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur. If they are found worthyโ€”they are written for life; if they are found not worthyโ€”they are written for death.

People should always see themselves as though they are half-guilty and half-innocent. If they performed one mitzvah, they should be happy for tipping the balance towards innocence for themselves. If they performed one transgression, woe unto them for tipping the balance towards guilt for themselves, as it says [in Ecclesiastes 9:18], but one sinner destroys much good [i.e.,] on account of a single sin which they performed, much good is lost from them.

Rabbi Elazar the son of Rabbi Shimon says: As the world is judged by the majority [of its people], and the individual is judged by the majority [of their deeds], if they performed one mitzvah, they should be happy for tipping the balance towards innocence for themselves and for the entire world. If they performed one transgression, woe unto them for tipping the balance towards guilt for themselves and for the entire world, as it says [in Ecclesiastes 9:18], but one sinner etc. [i.e.,] on account of a single sin which they performed, much good is lost from them and from the entire world.
