1:00-2:00 p.m. ET

Responsa are among the oldest and most enduring forms of Jewish literature. We have records of tens of thousands of letters from rabbis answering questions posed to them. Unlike commentaries and codes, these are immediate, practical questions facing the Jews of the time. Their topics range from ritual to theology, the ethics of money to communal governance, and much more. In this class, we will look some of the most interesting and important responses of rabbis to questions through the ages, related to communal governance, daily life, and rabbinic controversy, taking a small dip into this vast sea of knowledge.
