Session I: Undergraduate Mini-Semester
This is a unique learning experience in which students explore the riches of the Bible and rabbinic literature. Courses are given only at the undergraduate level and are open to students of JTS’s Albert A. List College of Jewish Studies, as well as undergraduates enrolled at other universities. Outside students need to demonstrate proficiency in Hebrew beyond the introductory level.
Enrollment in this intensive program is limited; students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Because of the intensity of the courses, attendance is mandatory. Students are allowed one excused absence, as determined by the instructor. Classes meet six days a week, Sunday through Friday, and each course earns three credits.

2023 Session I Courses
BIB 3201: Contradictory Scriptures: Exodus and Deuteronomy (3 credits)

This class will compare and contrast the Books of Exodus and Deuteronomy, their theoretical origins in ancient Israel, and their respective contents and major themes. The course will stress historical/critical methodologies, and the literary study of major genre-types in biblical composition. Prerequisite: HEB 2103.
RLC 3012: Roman Emperors in Rabbinic Literature (3 credits)

In this course, students will improve textual skills by focusing on rabbinic stories about the Roman Emperor Antoninus in the Babylonian Talmud. We will read scholarship about rabbinic narrative conventions, explore the representation of Romans in rabbinic texts, and consider how rabbinic texts contribute to our understanding of Roman history. For a final project, students will pick a piece of text to translate and present to the class. Leading up to the final project, we will read scholarship from translation theory in order to understand the creative nature of translating. Students will pick their texts to translate with the consultation of the instructor.

Acceptance emails will be sent out beginning in late April, which will include registration information. Should you apply after April, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
The cost of each course is $2,250, inclusive of all fees. Payment will be required in full upon enrollment.
