Founded in 1893 and recognized today as the greatest Jewish library in the western hemisphere, The Library provides essential resources to students, scholars, social and art historians, and the general public from around the globe. The Library houses close to 400,000 volumes, including 26,000 rare books, the largest collection of Hebrew incunabula (books printed before 1501) in the world, and one of the world’s largest collection of ketubbot (Jewish marriage contracts). One of its more important resources is North America's largest collection of Genizah fragments (35,000 fragments). Of particular note, The Library is the first library worldwide to have its Genizah collection digitized and made available online (through the support of the Friedberg Genizah Project).
