People of Faith, Land of Promise traces, through
personal artifacts and communal treasures, the historical journey of the Jews
who settled in the New World. The exhibition draws upon The Library's rich collection
of manuscripts, printed books, pamphlets, archival documents, newspapers, prints
and postcards to depict the development of Jewish cultural and religious life
from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries. It features more than 100
extraordinary artifacts of Jewish American life, including the groundbreaking
1766 publication of the first English translation of the Jewish prayerbook and
an early colonial letter documenting the observance of Passover in the spring
of 1761.
