Ten Commandments

Germany, 18th century
Micrographic text: Song of Songs and verses from Exodus (19:1 - 20:14)
B (NS)Mc6

The combination of these two seemingly unrelated texts in this eighteenth-century plaque underscores the traditional perception of the special relationship between God and the Jewish people. The text in Exodus describes the revelation at Mount Sinai and culminates with the giving of the Ten Commandments, a representation of which is formed in this micrograph. The balance of the design is composed of the entire text of the Song of Songs, long understood by Jews to represent the love between God and Israel.
