Two dramatic episodes from the period of the Jews' travels in the desert flank the image of Moses receiving the Tablets of the Law. On the right, the Jews are cured from a plague when Moses directs their attention to the copper serpent; on the left, Moses is shown hitting the rock to obtain water for the Children of Israel.
