A tena'im document spells out the mutual promise between a man and a woman to contract a marriage at some future date. It contains the formulations of the terms on which the marriage will take place — the date and place of the proposed marriage, the dowry to be brought by the bride, or the period for which her father undertakes to provide for the couple. It is also customary to stipulate a sum of money as a penalty to be paid in the event of a breach of promise. |
