In 1722 the French scholar, Augustin Calmet (1672-1757) published his
massive, two-volume encyclopedia of the Bible. The work proved extremely
popular and was quickly translated and reprinted in Dutch (1725) and
English (1730). A series of 160 engravings covering a vast array of
Jewish customs, festivals, and biblical objects were specially commissioned
to further explicate the text. The illustrations featured here are labeled
A Jewish Man Dressed for Prayer and A Jewish Woman with
her Veil and Rich Ornaments. They were meant to accompany the entries
for Taled (sic. Tallit, a prayer shawl) and Veil.
