Two attorneys with distinguished records of helping businesses run smoothly will be honored this year with The Jewish Theological Seminary’s Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award. Scott A. Edelman, chairman of international law firm Milbank, and John Suydam, chief legal officer of Apollo Global Management, will be recognized at the 21st annual Rifkind Award Luncheon on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. The event will take place at noon at The Pierre, Fifth Avenue at 61st Street, in New York City.

He maintains an active litigation practice and is equally comfortable in civil litigation and regulatory matters. Mr. Edelman also provides advice to corporate clients and boards of directors on corporate governance and related issues.

Mr. Edelman joined Milbank in 1994 and became a partner in 1995. Prior to joining Milbank, Mr. Edelman served as an assistant United States attorney in the Southern District of New York from 1990 to 1994. He started his career at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Chambers USA has cited Mr. Edelman as a leading practitioner both in securities litigation and in white-collar crime and government investigations.

Mr. Edelman is a graduate of Yale University, where he obtained his BA (summa cum laude) and MA degrees in economics simultaneously. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Edelman is also a graduate of Harvard Law School, where he was a member of the Harvard Law Review and a John Olin Fellow in Law and Economics.

John Suydam is chief legal officer of Apollo Global Management, which he joined in 2006. Mr. Suydam has the formidable task, among many others, of managing the legal, compliance, and tax structuring functions for Apollo.

From 2002 to 2006, Mr. Suydam was a partner at O’Melveny & Myers LLP, where he served as head of Mergers & Acquisitions and co-head of the Corporate Department. Prior to that time, Mr. Suydam was chairman of the law firm O’Sullivan, LLP, which specialized in representing private equity investors.

Mr. Suydam serves on the board of the Legal Action Center, the Private Equity Growth Capital Council, and Environmental Solutions Worldwide. Mr. Suydam received his JD from New York University and graduated magna cum laude with a BA in history from the State University of New York at Albany.

The Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award was established at JTS in 1996 in recognition of Judge Rifkind’s exemplary life, which was marked by professional preeminence, distinguished public service, and unstinting devotion to the Jewish community. A graduate of JTS’s Teachers Institute (now List College), Judge Rifkind served as chairman of the JTS Board from 1963 until 1972.
