AN ONLINE MINI-COURSE WITH JTS

Six Mondays
November 11, 18, 25; December 2, 19, 16, 2019
12:00-1:00 p.m. ET

With Dr. Marcus Mordecai Schwartz, Director, Matthew Eisenfeld and Sara Duker Beit Midrash; Assistant Professor, Talmud and Rabbinics, JTS

The Mishnah is the earliest text of the Rabbis, preserving traditions from the Second Temple era and creating new practices. Modern readers often struggle with its terse language, remote concerns, and unresolved disagreements. The goal of this course is to demystify this foundational document and teach participants the skills to read and understand it. Paying close attention to language and context, we will work through diverse sample passages, gaining fundamental lexical and interpretive competencies. At the end of the course, each student will teach an independently prepared passage to the group.

For this class, regular attendance and preparation between classes is expected. This class is designed for those with a basic knowledge of Hebrew (the ability to read vocalized Hebrew and a vocabulary of at least 100 words) and of Judaism (primary Jewish education, a basic Judaism class, or reading a complete introduction to Judaism book). If you have questions about these prerequisites, please contact Lynn Feinman.

Cost: $100

Recordings will be available for those unable to attend live.

Registration required.
