JTS Headlines at BBYO Convention

Posted on Feb 13, 2019

JTS administrators and students joined thousands of Jewish teen and adult leaders last week at the BBYO International Convention (IC) in Denver. Teens involved with BBYO make up a growing number of List College applicants and students.

At the convention, several JTS students and our chief enrollment officeer, Melissa Present, were on the Jewish enrichment team. Present led student sessions on thinking about college from a Jewish perspective, while rabbinical student Kendell Pinkney, cantorial student Eryka Velazquez, and William Davidson School student Sarabeth Evangelista created Shabbat prayer and learning opportunities. Jonathan Posner, our resident chef/rabbinical student, led a culinary track.

Marc Gary, executive vice chancellor and COO, and David Hoffman, vice chancellor and chief advancement officer, were among the speakers at a series of workshops for leaders of Jewish organizations and other stakeholders. They discussed creating a better pipeline for young Jewish leaders as a way to expand professional talent in the Jewish world, and explored the process of organizational change as seen through the lens of a synagogue partnering with BBYO.

The outgoing BBYO international president is attending List College in the fall, and more than 15 current List College applicants have been involved in the organization.
