Rabbi Louis Jacobs 11th Annual Memorial Lecture

Benjamin Sommer, JTS professor and rewnowned biblical scholar, will explore theologically significant ambiguities in Exodus 19-20 and the interpretive debate that addresses contemporary questions on the nature of Torah and the status of halakhah. Professor Sommer’s most recent book is Revelation and Authority: Sinai in Jewish Scripture and Tradition.

Second Lecture with Benjamin Sommer 

Professor Sommer will also deliver the plenary lecture at the 100th anniversary meeting of Britain’s Society for Old Testament Study. His subject will be: “The Priestly Literature as Proto-Kabbalah Or, How Distinct Should Biblical Studies Be within Religious Studies?” The lecture takes place Monday, July 17, at 8:15 p.m. at Kings College, London, in the Safra Lecture Theatre of Kings College’s Strand Campus.
