Disciplining Desire: The Meaning of the Tenth Commandment
presented by Rabbi Eliezer Diamond
There has always been some uncertainty about the meaning of the mitzvah lo tahmod, often translated “You shall not covet.” We will explore the rabbinic attempt to establish its halakhic parameters and then consider its importance in guiding our lives and, in particular, its relevance to our present environmental crisis.
Rabbi Eliezer Diamond is the Rabbi Judah Nadich Associate Professor of Talmud and Rabbinics at JTS. He is currently writing a volume on prayer that will address the problem of cognitive dissonance for the contemporary worshipper and offer readings of traditional liturgy that use midrashic methodology to find meaning for the modern Jew. He is also editing a commentary on Yerushalmi Pesahim by Dr. Louis Ginzberg (z”l).
