Parshanut: Great Figures in Jewish Interpretation of the Torah

Thursdays, February 1-May 3, 7:30-8:45 p.m.

When Jews open a printed humash or book of nevi’im or ketuvim, the text is surrounded by commentaries, some familiar and some less so. Who were the people who wrote these commentaries, who gave us the “Jewish Bible?” This class will cover the great medieval commentators who put the Bible and its interpretation in the middle of Jewish intellectual life: Rav Sa’adia Gaon and the Karaites, Rashi and Rashbam, Avraham ibn Ezra and Radaḳ, the Zohar and the Ramban.

Sessions are taught by some of the world’s leading experts in these fields, including JTS’s Dr. Robert Harris, Associate Professor of Bible and Ancient Semitic Languages.

This course is sponsored by Drisha Institute for Jewish Education. Class will take place at Congregation Ramath Orah, 550 West 110 Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
