“The God of the Rabbis” with Dr. Jonathan Milgram

In this class we will explore some rabbinic views on God by reading both rabbinic texts and critical scholarship. During class discussions, participants will be encouraged to think creatively about the use of rabbinic texts about God as a tool for teaching from the pulpit and in schools. Topics: “God’s Power and the Powers of Astrology and Magic;” “The God of the Talmud and the Eventual Eradication of Anthropomorphism;” “How God Punishes: Bavli vs. Yerushalmi.”

Three Thursdays: November 3, 10, 17.

About the Instructor

Dr. Jonathan Milgram has lectured in New York City at the Drisha Institute for Jewish Education and Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School, as well as at other universities, including at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies and the London School for Jewish Studies. He was assistant editor for Talmud and Rabbinics for the Encyclopedia Judaica, second edition, and recently completed a book on rabbinic inheritance law. Dr. Milgram is the former assistant rabbi of Manhattan’s Park East Synagogue and a trained cantorial soloist who has led High Holiday services in the US and abroad. He was ordained at Yeshiva University, and earned his doctorate in Talmud from Bar-Ilan University.
