In this vividly rendered narrative, Jenna Weissman Joselit situates the Ten Commandments within the fabric of American history. Once the lodestar of American identity, offering a promise of order and stability, as the United States has grown more and more diverse the commandments have increasingly engendered controversy as much as they have provided common ground.
