October 29 Lecture
“At Home Abroad: Is Jewish Life Valid Outside the Land of Israel?,” with Dr. David Kraemer, Joseph J. and Dora Abbell Librarian and Professor of Talmud and Rabbinics, JTS
We have learned that Jewish life was born in the Land of Israel, and that from the time of our expulsion from the land, Jews unceasingly yearned to return. But for most of our existence, most Jews have lived outside the land, in what has mostly been known as “exile.” Has that life in exile been “invalid,” to be negated (as many Zionists would have it) upon our return? Many Jews living outside the land have not accepted such a notion and have instead justified diaspora life religiously and vigorously. In this session, we shall explore some of these unexpected justifications.
The JTS lecture will be preceded by a class with a local clergy member.
Cost
$36 per person for the five weeks of courses and lectures.
