What Is Blackboard and How Do I Start Using It?

i. What Is Blackboard?

Blackboard is a web-based course management system that enables instructors to create and manage courses in a user-friendly manner. Blackboard allows faculty to distribute course materials and organize class communication by using the Internet. While requiring virtually no technical expertise, Blackboard significantly enriches the traditional course environment, using the web without the usual technical barriers for doing so. Available to you on Blackboard is a variety of unique tools that greatly enhance the learning experience.

ii. How to log on and access your Blackboard account:

  • Step 1: Make sure that you have activated your JTS email account. Click here if you have not yet done this.

  • Step 2: In your browser (IE7 is recommended), navigate to http://jts.blackboard.com. Click the Login button on the left side of the screen.

  • Step 3: Enter your Username and Password in the fields provided. Then click the Login button.

* Your username is the first two letters of your first name, followed by your last name, just like your JTS email account. For instance, if your name is John Doe, your username would be jodoe.

* Your password is the combination of your initials and the last four digits of your JTS student ID. For instance, if your name is John Doe and your student ID is 12345678, your password would be JD5678. (Please note: Blackboard passwords are case-sensitive. JD5678 is not the same as jd5678.) Also, your student ID is not your Social Security number. Your ID can be found on your student bill or your class schedule.

*If you forget your username and/or password, click on the Forgot Password? link. An email will be sent to your JTS email account that will enable you to change your password. Email Blackboard@jtsa.edu if you need further help with your user name and password.

  • Step 4: After logging in to Blackboard, you should now be on your Blackboard home page. Click Next to learn about this page.
