Rabbinical School Application Essays

We hope that the reading, thinking, and writing you do in preparing your essays will be exciting and clarifying for you. As you seek the rabbinate, it's important that you articulate some of your fundamental ideas and commitments. In these essays, please reflect on:

  • your spiritual biography
  • your religious identity and practice, in part responding to our Norms of Religious Identity and Practice document
  • a major theme in your personal faith, choosing one from among:

Jewish Peoplehood

  • a vision for your rabbinate

The Admissions Committee will read your essays carefully. At your interview, your essays will help the committee engage with you in a respectful and searching conversation about becoming a rabbi.

You can download the full essay questions here. You'll find them as well on the application form.
