A Note on Folder Headings

Historical Note

The Flatbush Jewish Center, Brooklyn, New York, was founded in 1921. Its rabbi of many years was Abraham M. Heller, a 1924 graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary. The Center merged with the Shaare Torah Jewish Center during the 1980s.

Collection Description

This collection consists solely of newsletters of the Flatbush Jewish Center, 1925-1988. These are complete for stretches of years, but do include gaps. There are sixteen bound volumes - the later ones are spiral bound - and a group that are unbound.

The newsletter began publication in 1925, and came out weekly or bi-weekly. It was variously called The Centre News, the Flatbush Jewish Center News, and the Bulletin of the Flatbush and Shaare Torah Jewish Center,Congregation Ahavath Achim.

These newsletters, as is generally the case with synagogue bulletins and newsletters, contain information documenting the lives of the synagogue and its congregants. Included are announcements of times of services and sermon topics, announcements of lectures and holiday events, news about congregants, and information about the sisterhood, Hebrew school, and other groups. During times of war and other emergencies there are news items and other pieces about current events. Advertisements from local businesses provide a sense of the larger community.
