Suggested Guidelines for Attracting Davidson School Graduates

In a survey of our recent master's-level graduates, most students who accepted full-time positions in Jewish education were offered contracts with the following guidelines, and this is what we recommend to our graduates.

SALARIES
$50,000 minimum for a ten-to-twelve-month full-time position as a day school teacher.
$60,000 minimum for a supervisory position in an informal or communal agency.
$60,000–$80,000+ for a director of education in a supplemental school (depends on number
of students and faculty).

In multi-year contracts, a clear percentage increase should be stated at the outset. It also
needs to be clear if cost-of-living increases are the only option or if a merit increase can
also be achieved.

HEALTH INSURANCE
Including vision and dental if available for others in the organization. At a minimum, single coverage with ability to contribute towards family plan if needed. If not needed, equivalent
payment to spouse/partner plan.

UNEMPLOYMENT AND WORKER'S COMPENSATION INSURANCE
This should be paid by the employer.

PENSION
By the second year, a matching or percentage contribution by the employer. Employees should know in what year they will become fully vested. This is very helpful as incentive in multi-year contracts.

VACATION
Two to three weeks the first year, increased the second year. If working in a school setting, this is in addition to days when school is not in session (e.g., winter break, legal holidays).

SICK AND FAMILY LEAVE DAYS
Ten per year.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
For children if applicable.

RELOCATION STIPEND
If moving long distance. Suggested $3,000–5,000.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
For dues and conventions. Minimum $1,500, plus money in the budget for professional
development for staff if applicable.

EVALUATION
Based on a clear, written job description that is presented before a contract is signed. This
can then be the basis for evaluation at three months, six months, and after the first year. Define who will evaluate, the process, and the delivery of the results.

SUPERVISOR
Direct supervisor should be clearly defined.

MENTORING
If not accepted to the Davidson Field Practitioners Program, the agency provides for outside
mentoring at approximately $2,000–3,000 per year. The Davidson School will provide professional training of outside mentors hired by the organization at no cost. The organization must pay for travel and lodging.

MINIMUM LENGTH OF CONTRACT
An ideal first contract would be two to three years with a firm date when employees will know
if they are being re-hired and then a firm date by which an employee must make a commitment to the organization.

Contracts should be negotiated and signed within thirty days of the initial verbal agreement.

WORK HOURS
Define expectations of regular work days. Shabbatot? Hagim? Night meetings?
Weekend responsibilities? Please clarify if there are other expectations of participation
outside of defined work hours.

NOTES
1. Work done before a regular contract begins should be paid at same rate as contract.
2. Some organizations offer student-loan-reduction percentage payments for each year of
employment.
