Robert J. Jossen, a partner at Dechert LLP, will be honored at The Jewish Theological Seminary's fourteenth annual Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award Luncheon on Tuesday, May 12.
Mr. Jossen's practice focuses on securities and white-collar criminal defense, complex commercial litigation, and legal ethics. Prior to entering private practice, he was chief appellate attorney in the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, and earlier an assistant US attorney in the Criminal Division. He began his legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable Marvin E. Frankel of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Prior to joining Dechert, Mr. Jossen was co-chairman of the New York Litigation Group at Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman, LLP.
Mr. Jossen served as president of Temple Israel Center of White Plains from 2004 to 2007. For nearly twenty years, he has served as the general counsel to the Rabbinical Assembly of the Conservative Movement, and also as a member of The Rabbinical School Advisory Board. Each year, Mr. Jossen conducts seminars with the graduating class of rabbinical students on confidentiality, counseling, and contracts.
Mr. Jossen is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been listed for the past ten years as one of the best business litigators in the country in Best Lawyers in America. A former chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Judicial Conduct of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, he has lectured widely on ethics and other topics for the Practicing Law Institute and the New York State Bar Association. He has served as an adjunct professor of Legal Ethics at both Columbia University Law School and St. John's University Law School, an adjunct lecturer in Professional Responsibility at Brooklyn Law School, and an instructor for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA). Mr. Jossen is a graduate of Cornell University and Columbia University Law School, where he was the notes and comments editor of the Columbia Law Review.
The Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award was established in 1996 in recognition of Judge Rifkind's exemplary life, marked by professional preeminence, distinguished public service, and unstinting devotion to the Jewish community. A graduate of JTS's Teachers College (now known as List College), Judge Rifkind served as chairman of the JTS Board from 1963 until 1972.
