List College students are a diverse group committed to learning. Resident advisers and Jewish Life directors enhance the unique atmosphere in the residence halls by modeling Jewish living and providing a supportive atmosphere to create a dynamic and engaging Jewish community.

Incoming students spend their first two years in the Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall, a suite-style living facility conveniently located two blocks from both JTS and Columbia/Barnard. Students in our dual-degree programs are guaranteed housing for four years.

As a first year student in Mathilde, you will share a room that features cable, phone, and Internet connections. You and your suite-mates will share a common room and a full kosher kitchen. Many List College students develop their cooking skills by preparing meals.

Most upper-class students live in Goldsmith Hall, where groups of four to six students share an apartment with a kitchen, living room, and bathroom.

Students in the Double Degree Program with Barnard College may opt to live in Barnard housing for one or more years.

Get Involved at Columbia University and Barnard College

With more than 500 organizations and clubs, Columbia University provides a wide array of opportunities to get involved. Opportunies at Barnard are also as extensive as they are diverse.

Whether you are an athlete or casual competitor, a wide variety of sports clubs at Columbia may be for you. Singers, dancers, and actors share their talents in one of many a cappella groups, such as the renowned Pizmon and Non-Sequitur, the Israeli dance troupe Shalhevet, JTS's annual Hebrew musical, or one of Columbia's theater groups.

Many students participate in student council at Columbia or Barnard, join fraternities or sororities, and write for and edit the Columbia Daily Spectator.

Living in New York City

List College is located in Morningside Heights, a bustling neighborhood where students enjoy dining at outdoor cafes, browsing in eclectic boutiques, finding new novels at local bookstores, walking or relaxing in Riverside Park, and checking out local farmers' markets and street fairs.

Jump on the downtown subway or bus and you will find a city brimming with music, culture, museums, Central Park, the lights of Broadway, and so much more. Also easily accessible are Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, US Open tennis, and major transportation centers for a weekend away with your friends.

The rich fabric of Jewish culture is inseparable from the city itself. Visit The Jewish Museum (free for JTS students) and the Tenement Museum for a trip into Jewish history or take a walk through any of the many exciting and vibrant neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs.

Dining Services

The JTS Dining Hall serves a wide range of kosher breakfast and lunch options. Meals are varied and cater to just about every taste and include:

• Freshly baked muffins and pastries enhance breakfasts.
• An abundant salad bar features more than eight different salads, assorted fresh vegetables, and a big bowl of fresh greens.
• All meal entrees include vegetarian selections.

There are also many kosher dining options at Barnard and Columbia, including the new Cafe Nana at Columbia/Barnard Hillel.

Student Council

List College Student Council (LCSC), the student government elected by the List College student body, serves as the students' representative and liaison to the administration.

LCSC is in constant contact with all aspects of student involvement at JTS, including Student Life, Residence Life, the student-faculty committee, and the Va'ad Gemilut Hasadim: Susan and Jack Rudin Center for Community Outreach, in order to give students ample opportunity to join in all areas of academic and student affairs at JTS.

LCSC also works closely with the GSSC (Columbia University School of General Studies Student Council) and the SGA (Barnard's Student Government Association), to provide List College students with the ability to fully integrate into their affiliated university communities. List College students are encouraged to join both the GSSC and SGA and have held past and current positions on these boards.

On a regular basis, LCSC plans events for List College students, including dinners, movie outings, and the annual formal. The primary mission is to enhance the college experience for everyone who attends List College.

Va'ad Gemilut Hasadim

The Va'ad Gemilut Hasadim: Susan and Jack Rudin Center for Community Outreach seeks to promote community service at JTS.

Through its hands-on volunteer opportunities, educational programs, and annual Tzedakah Campaign, as well as everyday outreach, the Va'ad provides a variety of opportunities for JTS students, faculty, and staff.

Funds are raised throughout the year for the Va'ad's Tzedakah Campaign and are donated to organizations in need in the United States, Israel, and internationally. We invite you to explore the varied programming and find out how you can start making a difference today.
