In this course, we will explore the Mishnah, the first and most important document of Jewish oral law. Though the Mishnah presents itself as primarily a legal document, we will discover through analysis of structure, content, and development of the ideas therein how this work is actually an incredible literary document. We will begin by studying the final chapter of Tractate Pessachim, which deals with the Passover seder. We will then compare this material to that which is also found in the Haggadah, the two Talmuds, and the various midrash collections. By Passover, you will know more than whoever is leading your seder, guaranteed!
