Ninth Grade: Rabbinic Civilization, Isaac Shalev

The rabbinic period marks a shift from biblical Israelite religion, centered on the Temple cult in Jerusalem conducted by priests, to what we know as Judaism: a portable religion centered on the study of Torah as the means of accessing and following God's will. How did the rabbis understand their innovations? We will examine a number of rabbinic texts, which seek to justify Torah study, prayer, and the synagogue in light of the Torah.
